Adult Rowing Classes

Sign up now for adult rowing classes! One Thursday evening a month during spring, summer and fall, we'll be offering rowing lessons at Watergate Marina on the Mississippi River. Discover for yourself what Ratty meant when he said, "There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing-about in boats." You will relax and enjoy an evening on the river in good company while learning the skills and techniques that have been used to maneuver human powered boats for more than 3,500 years. 

We will be using two 22 foot yawl boats that were built by inner city youth. (A yawl boat is a rowing/sailing boat that was used primarily for ship-to-shore transport in the pre-outboard motor days.) These boats are safe, comfortable, fast, and fun. Each is crewed by four oarspersons and a coxswain who steers in the stern.

You will also get a chance to try the instructor boat -- a 45 year old White Bear Lake skiff recently restored by Urban Boatbuilders apprentices (see photo on left). This boat is the same basic type that was used by Jane Muckle Robinson, a federal light keeper responsible for lighting the channel navigation lights between Dayton's Bluff and the Saint Paul Stockyards (4 lights), from 1885 to 1921. She estimated that she rowed 50,000 miles in her twice-daily trip on the river.

The cost per session is $25.  You can sign up for any number of sessions that you like.  The entire fee goes to help support Urban Boatbuilders youth programming.
