River
Raft with Minnesota Technology High School
Minnesota Technology High
partnered with UBI in the design and
construction of a river raft reminiscent
of old-time flat boats and shanty
boats. To facilitate transportation
and storage, this raft is built of six
plywood pontoons that are assembled into
two 30 foot pontoons at launching.
The deck also consists of
modules that can be broken down and
reassembled as needed. The assembly
and launch is about a half-day
process. A canvas-covered shelter
is erected in the stern with 2 X 4
framing. This boat was a big
undertaking for the amount of class time
available. The MN Tech High
students and UBI boat building instructor
Phil Winger (pictured below on the right)
worked hard to complete it.
From all accounts the
work was worth it! Minnesota Tech
High students have enjoyed several
Huckleberry Finn-type adventures on the
the St. Croix and the Mississippi.
Awesome
summer cruising on a lazy river.
