My name is Naya Kamadi, I have been working at Urban Boatbuilders for about 3 months now. I first heard about the program through a site called Sprockets, I checked out the Urban Boatbuilders website and became very interested in the program. I continued to look for jobs but It seemed like all the jobs that are out there just weren’t fun. So I sent an email to Urban Boatbuilders and got a quick response. I got some job application sheets, and filled them out eagerly. After that it seemed like I was hired immediately. I was nervous about the interview at first but I realized they were really nice and cool too!
I enjoyed my first two weeks immensely, learning skills that I never thought would be available to teenagers. All the equipment was fascinating and up to date and all the boats that were on display looked beautiful. I learned step by step on how to make these boats from scratch, I learned working skills and new ways to do things. However the thing that really makes me appreciate this program is the life skills that you learn while you are here and the ability to use them in the outside world. I learn to not get frustrated by tasks and to take my time, I learned that everyone has their own way of doing things and to take complex tasks slowly and step by step. The environment of the shop is very warm and you just feel like you belong. The instructors are patient and caring and will help you with just about anything. There is just some charm about getting things done in the shop that can’t be replicated at any other workplace.
The care, effort and rewarding feeling that I get at Urban Boatbuilders is truly something unique. Any other job that I have had was not nearly as fun or rewarding. I always tell people at school how fun it is to work here. When I leave Urban Boatbuilders to go home I usually arrive home in a better mood than when I left. And even when I am at school I often get excited about the work that is awaiting me at Urban Boatbuilders. All of these feeling I’ve had are only found here at Urban Boat Builders. It’s truly an eye opening experience!
