When I first heard about Urban Boatbuilders, I thought that any canoe we built would sink. Then I got here, and I learned all the steps, and I knew it wouldn’t. When I first got here, I thought it was going to be boring, but then I got started on my paddle, and I found out it wasn’t boring at all. I got excited and I thought “Wow, this is going to be fun,” as soon as I started doing stuff.
I’m in 11th grade at Como High School in Saint Paul. I found out about Urban Boatbuilders through my therapist, because she knew I liked woodshop and that this would be a cool thing for me to do. I’m excited for the summer, when we finally get to try out the boats we built. I really want to go to the Boundary Waters, and I’m excited to try portaging. I want to go because I’ll get to see and do something new.
I like lashing when we’re building the boats, and it’s easy and fast. I’ve helped build the new stand-up paddleboard and the black and white racing kayak, those have been my favorite boats. Outside of work I like to hang out with my friends and play basketball, and I like to go to the gym and lift weights. I want to be a mechanic because I like working with my hands and fixing stuff. I think Urban Boatbuilders is going to help me get there.
