My friends thought I was just learning to build boats, but I learned so much more.
Urban Boatbuilders Apprentice
Three years ago... I just couldn’t help but get into trouble. It was non-stop. I just couldn’t face up to the things I did wrong and I didn’t take responsibility for myself.
My life changed because I met Phil, the boatbuilding instructor from Urban Boatbuilders. He was teaching us how to build boats and I got really interested.
Now that I am working, I use the skills that I learned with Urban Boatbuilders every day.
Urban Boatbuilders is a great program. Not only does it help youth like me stay out of trouble, it also teaches them the skills that they need to be successful throughout their life.
My experience at Urban Boatbuilders has been great! I learned so much through wood work and I've actually have grown to like the smell of wood.
My favorite tool to use is the Japanese Saw, I like the way it looks and how almost effortlessly it is to use. My least favorite would have to be the Bandsaw, it's just so scary sounding and big!
Marc and Phil have been awesome bosses and friends. Whenever I had a problem or just need to talk they were there to listen and make me laugh.
I'm really going to miss the volunteers.. They are so helpful and some of the nicest people I know.
As I leave this job and go to another one I can know that I can do it because of Urban Boatbuilders and what they taught me.
