Camp Ogichi Daa Kwe
This summer, Urban Boatbuilders hosted a project at Camp Ogichi Daa Kwe in International Falls. The camp was started by the Camping and Education Foundation with the mission of inspiring the growth young people through fun, challenging wilderness adventures that promote self-discovery, teamwork, and service to others. A partnership with Urban Boatbuilders was a natural fit! An Urban Boatbuilders instructor went to the camp in July to host a three-week boatbuilding project with the girls’ camp.
Ogichi Daa Kwe is a canoeing adventure camp, and this year the girls got to both build and use a boat! There were two groups of campers — one built while the other went on a weeklong canoeing trip, then they switched for the second half. They launched their boat on Friday, August 5th, at the camp’s annual fish fry. We hope to continue the partnership next summer!
Want to bring a project like this to your school or organization? Urban Boatbuilders is now recruiting fall partners! Boatbuilding projects are tailored to each group’s needs — while some are focused on canoeing adventure, some are focused on the math and science of the building process, and some art focused on art and boatbuilding traditions. If you are interested in pursuing a partnership, please contact Collette at email@example.com.
Note: A previous version of this story misnamed the camp. The project took place at Camp Ogichi Daa Kwe. Their website can be found here.
Water Quality Workshop: A Photo Journey Come see us at the State Fair!
Last year in late summer, Urban Boatbuilders Apprentices set up shop at the Minnesota State Fair. This year we’ll be reprising our display and activities from 9 to 6 p.m. at the Department of National Resources Building, just south of the Grandstand! This year’s exhibit will feature a number of ways to get involved and show your support for Urban Boatbuilders.
Our Apprentices will be completing a boatbuilding project throughout the 12 days of the Fair! Fairgoers will have the chance to try their hand at lashing a canoe, and more importantly it's a chance to see our Apprentices in action! Our knowledgeable Volunteers will be there as well with information about the organization and boats. Come by and complete a social media challenge to win a secret prize. In addition, Fairgoers will have the chance to enter for their chance to win the kayak built on-site at the Fair! We will have several types of boats on display, all hand-crafted by our Apprentices, as well as information on State Fair special pricing on our boats.
The Minnesota State Fair runs from August 25th to September 5th. Stop by and see us at the Great Minnesota Get-Together! If you would like to join us as a Volunteer contact Sarah at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Boat Joke of the Month
A man paddling his kayak on a lake got chilly, and so he lit a fire in the boat...
It sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.
