November Events at Urban Boatbuilders
Urban Boatbuilders has two events coming up in the next month! The first will be an Open House at our shop in celebration of Minnesota’s annual tradition of Give to the Max Day. Come to the Urban Boatbuilders workshop on Thursday, November 12th to see what we’re all about, and embrace the spirit of Minnesotan giving. Stop by for a quick bite to eat and a guided tour of our workshop 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. If you can’t make it in the morning, have no fear, there will be tours ongoing throughout the day. In the evening, please join us for dinner and additional guided tours. Throughout the course of the day Apprentices and alumni will be working on a live build, so guests will be able to see them in action and even try their own hand at boatbuilding!
Shortly following the Give to the Max Day Open House will be the Tool and Boat Sale on Saturday, November 14th, also at our workshop. We’ve amassed an inventory of gently used tools over the years, and want to turn that surplus into something mutually beneficial for the community and for the youth we serve. Come stop by from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and check out the tools for sale! In addition, we will be featuring special pricing on all of our boats. Brats and beer will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds from the sales will go back to the organization, so you can be sure that anything you purchase will help us to continue our mission of youth development through the building and use of wooden boats!
We are still seeking donations of gently used tools for the sale. Please see below for more information. We’re very excited about our November events, and we hope to see you there!
We're Looking for Tools!
Urban Boatbuilders is hosting a sale of gently used tools and our boats at our workshop on Saturday, November 14th. A fun follow-up day to our Give to the Max Day celebration the preceding Thursday, the tool and boat sale will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with brats and beer available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. until supplies run out. All of our boats will have special pricing that week, so it’s the perfect time to pick up the watercraft of your dreams!
We are seeking donations of gently used tools for the tool sale! If you have extra tools laying around the homestead, now is the time to donate them to help benefit a great cause – all proceeds from the sale will go back to the organization. We’re interested in tools that are still in a decent, useable condition. If you have something you want to donate, or questions about the sale, please give us a call at 651-644-9225, or email Michael at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope to hear from you if you have anything you’d like to donate, and we’ll see you all at our awesome November events!
Zanewood Launch and Fall Partnerships
About two weeks ago, youth from the Zanewood Recreation Center in Brooklyn Park saw the culmination of their success in a boat launch on Friday, October 2nd. Over the course of the summer or 2015, more than 50 youth from the Zanewood Rec Center worked together to build a Mississippi Skiff with the guidance of Urban Boatbuilders staff. After a summer-long successful partnership, youth, their families, and instructors were thrilled to finally see their craftsmanship and hard work translate into a viable watercraft. The launch took place on a small lake near Brooklyn Park Community Center. Way to go, Zanewood!
After all the summer’s successful launches, instructors and schools were very excited to begin Fall 2015’s roster of partnership projects. Currently, Urban Boatbuilders has projects running with Journeys Secondary School, Parkway Montessori Middle School, the 916 school district, Boys Totem Town, and Spring Lake Park High School. All the projects are going well, and though the looming cold means that any local lake launches will have to wait until next spring, we know that instructors and students are hard at work learning about and building wonderful boats.
